What do you search for?

Everyday we use search engines or other websites to find information, to locate places, food order in restaurants, search for local doctors, nearby law firm, clearance sales on clothes or electronics or furnitures, to check the climate, find news, download software codes, ebooks, write blog at the end of day, check office and personal mails, stock news, to go to woot.com, orkut.com, facebook.com, linkedin.com, flickr.com, youtube.com, adult related websites and many many others based on the individual needs, work, time, geograhic location etc.,

Given a hair, scientists will find out the complete DNA of the person whom it belongs to, same way the webhistory or the journal of what you do online - could define who you are, what you look for and where do you spend more time - one day if you note it down, you can learn a lot different things to do things appropriately and to utilize that time efficiently.

Below are few examples that I provide - which gives you an idea/glance at another person (that is myself) web activities on a particular day or you can compare yourself with (you searched for something and you ended up here or you are a regular visitor of my website). Some common routines we might share

1. What websites do I visit?

Everyday visits atleast couple of times:
Google mail, hotmail, yahoo (haven’t consolidated to one email provider yet and also have multiple email ids), Linkedin.com, Orkut.com, CNN.com, youtube.com, flickr.com, facebook.com (facebook - very rare nowadays), Couple of local websites (in my native language - Tamil), Wikipedia, google patents, internet marketing related news, technorati.com, Webhost4life.com, rapidshare (use google and then download free ebooks, tutorials, sample documents, graphics etc.,), godaddy.com, pcnames.com, all of the websites that I own and maintain (check blog roll and continue doing that) and all other websites which I don’t remember (as I visit them through google - work related)

And in other days:
I visit one new website each day, Visit my friends websites such as Muthu, Saravanan, and then for movie reviews visit Rotten Tomatoes, bank websites to see whether I have anything left at all to invest more in what I do, check weather.com when traveling, use maps in google, check competitors website (argh - now can I say that?!), Craigslist.org, meetup.com

If you see clearly, there are bunch of sites that you would visit frequently - it may or may not be in the list and I would have had not covered all the sites that I check. Now, what you may not know is that or what you know but cannot avoid is the internet addiction, if you check your email like half hour once as though every minute you expect something might pop up and finally to just see couple of junk mails and coupon saving promotion emails to be deleted waiting in the queue - that frustrates. At the end of this post - I will tell you how can you save some time.

2. What keywords do I search for?

Now, this vary from day to day, based on my needs, as how I started this post, it changes. But as of now, as of today and there are few search keywords, there are patterns in how people search for things, an internet savvy will not type “how do I find a dentist near my house?”, he/she will rather type dentist “location name” and thats it. There is a pattern how users search for, what they search for and how quickly they find relevant data/information. And this pattern is based on the individual skills of that person, geographic location, like how accent and usage varies from a Texas person to Newyork one.

Below are very few keywords that I provide that I use to search for some purpose, but for various different reasons, you can easily guess few and some you will definitely be wrong.

blog headers, “blog headers”, free blog headers, seo expert, seo consulting, adsense, site:www.themeheaders.com, seo new york city, adwords, business plan, successful entrepreneur, internet marketing agency, and a lots and lots of keywords

You might have your own bucket of keywords for everyday and the way you form the sentence to search them also maybe different.

Tips for saving time:

a) When you are not expecting mail, avoid checking mails frequently.
b) Learn type writing, old school way, asdf ;lkj, just learn it, in 3-4 months you can type 60 wpm (words per minute) - well I learnt it 15 years ago. (You can check this website for online typewriting resources here)
c) Do not type http:// everytime, and sometimes you do not need to type the www. as well, just type in the domain name and you do not have to type .com as well, use ALT + ENTER key after typing the domain name.
d) CTRL + N (pressing ctrl key and n in keyboard together will open another new browser)
e) You can find lots of tips online to save time by learning few computer tricks.
f) Do not read the same article again and again, do not watch the same video again and again just because it is the buzz.
g) If you are in Stock business, every tick is important - but you cannot be checking that by every second.
h) Bookmark sites, if it is your personal computer tick “remember me” checkbox - so you do not have to login each and everytime.

Let your colleagues and friends know these simple tips and get to know what websites do they check frequently and what keywords they use to search for. (only things which does not compromise their privacy). If you have time, you can comment it here on how you visited this post and for what (even if it means you are here to market your business website) and the sites and keywords that you use.

Cheers,
Shiva

And the clues are mentioned in the post - if you look at the word google and then suggest (they are italized). Yes, used the google suggestion tool bar and then typed SEO and a space, below are the words that google suggested as frequently searched ones at that point of time, like seo articles, seo agency, seo analyzer etc., Below is the complete set of those words and the whole post “Nothing but SEO” was written based on it.

Image Labeler

Why images are important aspect to take care when you do SEO for a website and how it helps to improve the traffic?

1. There is a huge traffic that comes to your site through images. Have images inbetween content for most optimized performance.

2. Image name: Do not keep whatever name you wanted or dynamic image names. Check out http://images.google.com/imagelabeler/, there will be two users simultaneously trying to name a image and when their keyword matches - the images passes for that specific word.

3. Provide alt tags with appropriate words (use plurals or other keywords that is not mentioned in the image name and that is relevant to it at the same time.)

4. One of the website factor is that it had to be XHTML compliant. This goes as well to images that are present in the website. If you do not have alt tag in your images - they (url where the image resides) will not pass validation in http://validator.w3.org/

5. For sample image naming and alternate text check http://www.themeheaders.com

SEO Chat and My PageRank sites!

These are couple of websites that are popular discussing about SEO and PageRank.

SEO Chat

and

My Pagerank

For those of you - who have been following my website know that I had been playing with title, keywords and description for website (as well as on the content)

Visit their sites and right click on the page and select View Source. In SEO Chat you will find that the title, description and keywords are one and the same. Whereas, in My Pagerank site they have dynamic title, keywords populated everytime you refresh their site. Two approaches and different rankings.

And not to mention that Matt Cutts (Google’s WebSpam Head), whose website I follow as well, doesn’t have any keywords/description meta tags on the last time that I checked.

So how do you want to optimize your site? I have long back tried all these three and ended up in my own version. You can try these effective ways in your sites as well.

Good luck,
Shiva

Link baiting

This post is going to become a link bait. To read about Link bait visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_bait

I am going to take the first 10 comments for this post and with those words from visitor comments I will form a different content for this post, which will appear in the below box. I forgot to mention, the visitor should post just one word and not repeating the same word.

Clothing Industry

I earlier talked about SEO Campaigns.

If an SEO firm or an SEO expert gets an opportunity to promote a clothing industry related website. They have to focus on keywords, competitors, domain knowledge and all other factors that I specified in my earlier post.

Sample target keywords will be: womens clothing, mens clothing, tops, apparel, tees, shirts, jeans, casual bottoms, sales, clearance, fall sale, winter sale, clearance sale, etc.,

Now talking about it, pagerank0 registered the domain Casual Bottoms and other clothing related websites (which I would provide later).

Point is, what can be achieved, and that time only had to tell?! If an SEO can promote other online businesses why cannot they create their own kingdom?!

Is my site listed in google for a specific keyword?!

Maybe it is already there, I am looking for a webmaster tool - which will tell me for a specific keyword where and whether my site is listed in google/yahoo/msn/altavista etc., For example: If I search for the keyword “seo resume” in google - I wanted to know where is my site (www.pagerank0.com) located, whether in the 1st page or 93rd page or not at all.

And further want that webmaster tool to send me an email whenever it finds my site listed in search results for specific keywords. Are there any tools that are available to do that? Let me know if you come across any such tool or I think that would be a good idea and if someone sponsor I can develop it :-)

Cheers,
Shiva

Spicy Image (Spicyimage)

Question:

I have the Site http://www.spicyimage.com/. I have a nice pagehits around 4.5K per day, but with no PR. Can you please look at it and help.
It has a good alexa rank though.

Suggestion:

PageRank has got nothing to do with number of hits it receives. Does this pagehits arrive due to back links alone? As it is a login authentication site there is no/less information to crawl and store (probably the user images might be crawled and indexed). I was unable to find much back links (with link:www.spicyimage.com in google). If you could let me know specifically what you are looking for to happen that would be great.

Cheers,

Shiva

Total Ski (totalski) - Evaluation

Total Ski

Question:

I currently have a PR of 0 but already have some good backlinks and over 650 pages of indexed content. Can you give me some advice on what might be wrong?

Suggestions:

1. Site is overall good, can focus on the design aspects more.

2. The Ski word is repeated 4 times in the title - could use a sentence with right choice and less repetitive words.

3. Lots of “Ski” words are there throughout the site, sometimes search engine might punish if the density of the words are more. Search engine spiders will grab the whole site and the logic built (Business layer) might think that the site is trying to spam the search engine.

4. Create yahoo forums, public groups etc., and have user participate in that. This way users might talk about your site.

Good luck,

Shiva
