URL Policy Change - Adwords

Starting April 2008, google adwords is mandating that the new ads will be required to have the same URL (both in destination and display). But what was not mentioned, is about the status of the existing advertisements and whether the display and quality score will be affected, and whether what kind of impact this new policy change is going to bring to old advertisements.

Many ads will show display url as microsoft.com or google.com or even competitors site and the landing url will be of someother local company website. This has drawn many visitors to easily pull towards their business or site, most users were unhappy about this practice and some companies too.

Isn’t it common sense not to allow in the first place to make sure that the display and destination page to be the same. Many people earned through affliate commissions as the destination page url will be with affliate id and pointing to a different business site, whereas the display url will be giving an impression that it will lead to an informative site.

I guess certain malpractices will stop because of this action.

How important are original images in a website?

Simple true story, never copy any images and post it in your website (even if you include credits), even if it is a royalty free image with no copyright issues. Always have your own image, or modify the royalty free image and then rename it and then use it in your site.

Test lab results from PageRank0 for Image:

I had an image from a website - provided the credits, the image got crawled for “bones body” and it was listed in google - after few weeks - that image is removed from index. Not only that, it removed some of the other original images as well. The traffic reduced considerably for my test site and search result ranking got affected as well. Below you can find a single image - which shows the difference. Now what happened was the original site has good ranking for the image and as well for the content. The content was original in my test site - but it is now a good lesson learnt missing 200 unique visitors a day!

Original, Original and Original Images, Pictures or Photos, no copy/paste whatsoever!

And same thing happened for “Optical Illusion” keyword as well.

original image

Now, with other test site which provides free Website Blog Headers, all of them are original and they keep appending in crawler and none of them had been removed so far for any reasons.

Shiva

Google Image Crawler works

Google finally started crawling images from my other blog header website http://www.themeheaders.com

After several months this had happened, I am not sure whether disabling/enabling image crawl check button in webmaster tools did this magic.

You can checkout using this link

Google Adwords vs Adbrite

I love Google and who does not?!

For the first time I am seeing a different layout by google in the sponsored links area, that not millions will get a chance to see. I am stunned today - to see their “Skills” against adbrite.

Similar to adsense, I was looking other advertiser’s marketplace such as Overture, Adbrite, etc.,. And this is what happened, below is the screen shot when I search for adsense in google.com

adsense search in google

and this one for Overture search in google
overture keyword search in google

Oh wait until you see this one, for adbrite
ornaments for adbrite

Note that arrow mark that I had kept, you see Google image (I just checked after finishing this post - the image file name says ornaments) These searches where done in the same time and for the rest of the searches it was a vertical line and only for adbrite the vertical image changes to ornaments image to grab the visitor attention.

So what happens with this NEW change in the right hand side? people click on the Sponsored links and “Adbrite pays money” to Google!! Wow!!!

I guess Adbrite and other people who are listed there can Sue google for this.

This is search word, maybe its still like that - you can check it yourself

Google stunt on Adbrite keyword

I will be very glad, if somebody proves me wrong. This is first time I had seen a different UI (user interface) in google and surprised on this monopoly game!!!

If you empathize with me, then I guess “Money clashes all principles a company might have”.

Update around 11pm
Ok, I just saw this post as well http://www.handsomelogic.com/blog/pay-per-click-ppc/google-showing-christmas-ornaments-next-to-sponsored-links/.

Google changes their main logo during holiday season, but changing the vertical line to be of ornaments likely will get attention of users on the sponsored links. This could be no harm as the sponsored links shows up in first place to be clicked by google users - but in our case the first result link (organic search) is adbrite and the first link in the sponsored links area is also adbrite. But the only question is does the image diverts user to focus more on sponsored links area? or why it is that only certain keywords gets the ornament treatment?

How to remove search results indexed in SE for my website?

Search engine guys are thinking to reduce rank or ban certain links of a website which has their site search results crawled by them be it Google, MSN, Yahoo, Ask etc.,

You can check in the search engine by using site:pagerank0.com (replace with your site name) and see whether the user search results are crawled.

Search results crawled

To remove them from getting crawled in your robots.txt file just add:

Disallow: /?s=

In my case it was ?s, if your site is search, then you have to replace s with search. Additionaly if you are using google webmaster tool, you can submit that url to remove it from their index.

Linking (Looking) Back

1. It’s all started here Why pagerank is 0.

When the pagerank was zero

2. Then there was Canonicalization problem in msn and other search engines for http://www.pagerank0.com/ and http://pagerank0.com/. And that was fixed.

canonicalization issue in msn

The above was taken long back (pagerank0 labs), which shows the domain as pagerank0.com

msn-problem1.JPG

And for http://www.pagerank0.com/ there was only one listing.

3. For keywords pagerank, page rank and adsense got listed in Related Blog Search in google.

For adsense

4. Got #1 rank for various critical search keywords.

5. Got Good contacts and was able to establish business with clients for SEO Related work.

6. Sold some of my other websites (good ROI) after a successful and smart white hat SEO.

And much more happened..Thanks to all visitors who kept this site live and running.

Oh yes, its Pagerank 0’s first birthday!!

Find Good SEO Firm/Consultant

1. Does not send you spam emails with offerings such as $1000/year or talk to you on a fixed price for SEO Support. Beware of companies who talks this way - so if they have to optimize google.com they will still charge $1000/year and somedummy site for the same price?

2. If they promise results in first three pages or even number 1 ranking on search engines for specific keywords, be alert. For which, until they had written the search engine algorithm themselves, they cannot promise any such thing. Ask them whether they can list you number one for the letter “A” in all search engines?

3. Ask the firm their strategic plan and what they are intended to do with the website. If their response is “you dont have to worry about a thing - you will just see the results” and if they talk only about results are gauranteed and not explain you their action plan - find another seo person/firm.

4. No Doorway pages (keyword stuffing) or throw away domains (the SEO firm owns lots of domains and they put your link over there on relevant domain names and eventually after the work is done with you they will remove it). If at all, you can buy those domains and ask seo firm to build strategy based on it.

5. Check online forums/groups or search for that company to see whether they have web presence, and their rankings and SERP’s. As if they cannot do SEO to their own site: the same result is applicable to your site as well.

Google Adsense and Custom Search Engine

I just configured a Custom Search Engine for pagerank 0.

If you would like to setup something like that for your website, you can easily do that by following the steps provided in http://google.com/coop/cse/.

Also, if you want to earn money through adsense for your website, create an adsense account first and then map your custom search engine to adsense.

I included adsense for some of my websites and you can see the live demo here: ARRahman, Average Joe and Blog Headers, and also created a custom search engine for both arrahman.net and pagerank0.com

The setup was quite easy and you might miss the purpose of channels the first time when you do that (because I did :-)) and later found that it was quite useful for statistical purposes to understand which website and which type of advertisement brings more money - whether it is Link ads or Text-Image ads.

It is like few hours now since I had setup the site for adsense monetize and seeing some results (few dollars) - which I think is a good start and promising. I will update later whether on the amount part, so keep checking this site for Future updates.

You can start from here: Welcome to Adsense

Cheers,
Shiva

Google Error - 403 Forbidden

This is unfortunate to write after posting about the Google’s next step in search?.

For past few days (that’s when I had started) using Blog search with keywords “1993-97″ or “1993-1997″ or any numbers with hyphen in them - after clicking the search button twice - I get the following error and for atleast another half hour I am unable to use the blog search at all. This error is not new and had been there for more than a year - technically I know why they do that - but as a user I will be worried seeing virus checker and etc., messages.

So for those who get this below error, don’t panic - google throws this error to avoid spam queries and it just happened that your query matched that kind of pattern.

“Google Error

We’re sorry…
… but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can’t process your request right now.

We’ll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, if you suspect that your computer or network has been infected, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your systems are free of viruses and other spurious software.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we’ll see you again on Google”
