What do you search for?

Everyday we use search engines or other websites to find information, to locate places, food order in restaurants, search for local doctors, nearby law firm, clearance sales on clothes or electronics or furnitures, to check the climate, find news, download software codes, ebooks, write blog at the end of day, check office and personal mails, stock news, to go to woot.com, orkut.com, facebook.com, linkedin.com, flickr.com, youtube.com, adult related websites and many many others based on the individual needs, work, time, geograhic location etc.,

Given a hair, scientists will find out the complete DNA of the person whom it belongs to, same way the webhistory or the journal of what you do online - could define who you are, what you look for and where do you spend more time - one day if you note it down, you can learn a lot different things to do things appropriately and to utilize that time efficiently.

Below are few examples that I provide - which gives you an idea/glance at another person (that is myself) web activities on a particular day or you can compare yourself with (you searched for something and you ended up here or you are a regular visitor of my website). Some common routines we might share

1. What websites do I visit?

Everyday visits atleast couple of times:
Google mail, hotmail, yahoo (haven’t consolidated to one email provider yet and also have multiple email ids), Linkedin.com, Orkut.com, CNN.com, youtube.com, flickr.com, facebook.com (facebook - very rare nowadays), Couple of local websites (in my native language - Tamil), Wikipedia, google patents, internet marketing related news, technorati.com, Webhost4life.com, rapidshare (use google and then download free ebooks, tutorials, sample documents, graphics etc.,), godaddy.com, pcnames.com, all of the websites that I own and maintain (check blog roll and continue doing that) and all other websites which I don’t remember (as I visit them through google - work related)

And in other days:
I visit one new website each day, Visit my friends websites such as Muthu, Saravanan, and then for movie reviews visit Rotten Tomatoes, bank websites to see whether I have anything left at all to invest more in what I do, check weather.com when traveling, use maps in google, check competitors website (argh - now can I say that?!), Craigslist.org, meetup.com

If you see clearly, there are bunch of sites that you would visit frequently - it may or may not be in the list and I would have had not covered all the sites that I check. Now, what you may not know is that or what you know but cannot avoid is the internet addiction, if you check your email like half hour once as though every minute you expect something might pop up and finally to just see couple of junk mails and coupon saving promotion emails to be deleted waiting in the queue - that frustrates. At the end of this post - I will tell you how can you save some time.

2. What keywords do I search for?

Now, this vary from day to day, based on my needs, as how I started this post, it changes. But as of now, as of today and there are few search keywords, there are patterns in how people search for things, an internet savvy will not type “how do I find a dentist near my house?”, he/she will rather type dentist “location name” and thats it. There is a pattern how users search for, what they search for and how quickly they find relevant data/information. And this pattern is based on the individual skills of that person, geographic location, like how accent and usage varies from a Texas person to Newyork one.

Below are very few keywords that I provide that I use to search for some purpose, but for various different reasons, you can easily guess few and some you will definitely be wrong.

blog headers, “blog headers”, free blog headers, seo expert, seo consulting, adsense, site:www.themeheaders.com, seo new york city, adwords, business plan, successful entrepreneur, internet marketing agency, and a lots and lots of keywords

You might have your own bucket of keywords for everyday and the way you form the sentence to search them also maybe different.

Tips for saving time:

a) When you are not expecting mail, avoid checking mails frequently.
b) Learn type writing, old school way, asdf ;lkj, just learn it, in 3-4 months you can type 60 wpm (words per minute) - well I learnt it 15 years ago. (You can check this website for online typewriting resources here)
c) Do not type http:// everytime, and sometimes you do not need to type the www. as well, just type in the domain name and you do not have to type .com as well, use ALT + ENTER key after typing the domain name.
d) CTRL + N (pressing ctrl key and n in keyboard together will open another new browser)
e) You can find lots of tips online to save time by learning few computer tricks.
f) Do not read the same article again and again, do not watch the same video again and again just because it is the buzz.
g) If you are in Stock business, every tick is important - but you cannot be checking that by every second.
h) Bookmark sites, if it is your personal computer tick “remember me” checkbox - so you do not have to login each and everytime.

Let your colleagues and friends know these simple tips and get to know what websites do they check frequently and what keywords they use to search for. (only things which does not compromise their privacy). If you have time, you can comment it here on how you visited this post and for what (even if it means you are here to market your business website) and the sites and keywords that you use.

Cheers,
Shiva

SEO Contests or Link Bait?

For a long time, there are lots of SEO competitions and contests that were happening around the world, to match two unpopular words and get listed on top of the organic search results. Recent one being “cheeni climate” and it started from Schnitzelmitkartoffelsalat, Nigritude ultramarine, seraphim proudleduck, “the four required words”, precharge projectnet and then “Globalwarming Awareness2007″

You can read more about it here SEO Contest

The prizes that are awarded sometimes encourage the SEO professionals in many places, and the good thing is to test the ability of an SEO with white hat strategies to achieve the same. But my question or concern is that, the contests are arranged by companies that want the people to sign up (its a good strategy to promote their own website), refer them and they get it done for around $100. Now that is another way of Search engine marketing and in a way link baiting.

Contests are good, Link bait is fine - but instead of unpopular keywords, why not go for the real deal? Keywords such as “Improve business”, “Increase sales”, “Wedding ring”, “Patio Furniture” and just for the word “SEO” itself? - Now that will be some challenge and meaningful for the time taken by the SEO Experts out there. Do you agree?

What are the benefits of using SEM?

Money, Money and more Money.

Everyone runs and works for money. Once upon a time there was no remote for the television, no microwave, no elevators and no beers. As time goes, people create and then adapt themselves to new things. Your company by this time should be sueing an SEO..err..using an SEO to promote your online business. So you always have this question, how to improve my business online?

There are like billions of internet users, atleast millions of users for whatever business domain that you have or you are involved.

In this, How many percentage are visiting your website?
How many of them use your services?
What is your online sales? Is your site reachable by these potential customers through organic searching/ppc/ad links?, What is the strategy of your online compaign?

Customers everyday search for things like “latest electronic gadgets”, “wordpress themes”, “buy cycle”, “cheap and affordable cars”, “women clothing”, “wedding diamonds”, “you pick farms”, “internal medicine doctor”, “how adsense works” and million other things. Now the question that you have to ask yourself is, where is my website? what keywords would I like my website to be visible online, what are the competition that I have for my business and how an SEO/SEM Consultant will help me achieve that.

I am not kidding, you can make millions - atleast to start with a lots of thousands, if you already have a established business - your sales growth will go high - once you start marketing online properly!

Below is the real time example, many of you would have heard about RedCats USA group ( Chadwicks, La Redoute, Jessica London etc.,)

This is the snippet from the above red cats url:

€4.332 billion Sales in 2006
€225 million Operating Income in 2006
32.1% Sales made on line in 2006 vs. 4% in 2001
53.6% Sales originating outside France in 2006 (France: 46.4%; United States: 27.5%; UK: 11.1%; Scandinavia: 8.1%; Rest of the world: 6.9%)
31 million active customers
24 million visitors a month on all Redcats merchant sites combined

Now, note that in 5 years span the online sales went from 4% to 32.1%. If they can, don’t you think you can do the same? Also 24 million visitors a month - how many visitors your website is getting? I understand that online marketing alone is not sufficient and you need to establish a brand value and my question is how hard are you working on that? Are you there yet with your best?

Do you want another example, Blockbuster is closing few of its stores and trying to promote its online rental to the best possible. There are lots of stories of how corporate companies work to get an online presence and money out of it - I know how much they can spend or are spending already - with right SEO consultants/SEO company you can achieve the same being a growing small company.

I have to warn you here, it is not a month work or 3 month work, it is an ongoing effort - one to improve and second important thing is to retain what gained. You should be aware of SEO companies that promises 3 months work and all is done, reason is simple, if they promise you that your business will boom like anything, why cannot the same SEO company start their own and achieve using their SEO/SEM skills? Promoting is possible, business improving rapidly is possible - but long term (maybe commission basis) - short term ends the same way - short term.

Good luck,
Shiva

Google’s next step in search?

Google is currently focusing on what is called “topicality”. Few years back it was just mere word search and people were glad to find some information on what they search for. Google is working on signals and classifiers concepts (as per NYtimes reporter). I do not want to get into terminologies, but what google wanted to achieve is to take themselves to another step towards meaningful search. What happens when a user search for “orange” - does it mean bring information on color or bring information about fruit?

I call this as entity problem, even http://challenge.spock.com/ had announced a competition to address this issue ($50,000?!) - I have worked on a similar project to address this entity issue, though it was in Intellectual Property industry - same architecture can be applied to search engine as well, but definitely a bit complicated. I would assume their existing search algorithm is good enough that based on various factors such as signals, classifiers, pagerank, referrals, age of content (http://www.waybackmachine.org/ is a great site) , etc., to index and fetch appropriate sites.

Eh, but that is not going to be enough. Google had to understand what the user thinks - more or less like Artificial Intelligence - you know what - not even AI - but Google had to be a psychic.

Google so far had relied on various websites (as such all websites throughout the world), key websites such as wikipedia, technorati, flickr or all web2 and web3 (web cube in future) will play a major role in future.

Wikipedia’s major traffic comes through google, but google isn’t doing favor to Wiki, rather Wikipedia is information and content specific. You can recollect this Wikipedia vs Dictionary post that I had written earlier. Wikipedia is dynamic, human edited, precise and with accurate information. And dictionary is mere words. So where should google focus more now? content or words oriented?

Google has more challenges to address now:

-3. Interpret websites (get words and then get synonym and index)
-2. Current and old topic search (trends)
-1. Read my mind or voice activated search
0. Utilize google groups search (discussion threads), answers.google.com (I liked this site, no idea why it got dropped)
1. Efficient Content oriented search
2. Entity related (Topicality) search.
3. avoid and identify Spamdexing
4. updating and synchronizing data servers.
5. handle evergrowing cache data

I think that’s enough for today. Oh yes, Google is my favourite search engine so far.

Search Engine Optimization - SEO

What is SEO/SEM and why do my website needs it?

SEO stands for Search engine optimization and SEM for Search engine marketing. SEO is one of the method in SEM and rest SEM methods are paid links, paid ads in search engines and other websites. For personal or business you would like a lot of traffic, especially if its business site you would love to have more number of unique visitors coming into your site. The more the people - the more your revenue. In order to increase traffic, you have to get listed in top pages in search engines for certain keywords, say for example if you have a travel site, and your site is good when only if it gets listed when people search for “buy air tickets”, “cheap air tickets”, “cheap air fares”, etc.,

So in order for that to happen, your site should have those keywords in site or in meta tags or both. Also you need to use lots of tools to find synonyms, KEI tools and alternative words to get wide audience of searchers.

Now - I am going to try to get this post listed in search engines when people use “SEO”, “seo tips”, “seo example”. So far http://www.pagerank0.com/ is not listed for any seo related keyphrases. For this to happen - I need your assistance as well.

Kindly give a link back to this article in your site with anchor links as seo or seo tips or seo example. You can copy the below code and paste in your site and I will identify your site within a week and post myself, if not you can comment it here.

Cheers,
Shiva

Wikipedia vs Dictionary

Please provide your comments on these two sites http://www.wikipedia.org/ and http://www.dictionary.com/ based on why wikipedia site comes in search engines in the first 6 pages for most keyword search when dictionary has all the words listed in them and doesn’t show up? Interesting enough, search for dictionary in google and you will see wikipedia site in the second page with this url http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictionary, I do have some thoughts on these two sites - especially with Wikipedia and why it is popular and why search engine favors them, but before providing that would like to know your thoughts.

You can find it here now: Google’s next step in search?
